Filmed from the glass elevators in the Marriot Marquis I surveilled the action on the endless indoor balconies of Portman’s strangely public/private building. In the gallery I built a 20'-high tower with four 16mm projectors linked with timing belts. One 150'-long film loop passes from the ceiling down through the linked projector. On the wall is a totem of four stacked images. The effect is a heightened awareness of the passage of time. Jet lag made visible. As the action and sound repeat passing through each machine, one sees a filmstrip as if it were being held up to the light moving before our eyes.
